In the foreground is a man whose back is to the photographer and he is reaching his left hand up towards a lever on the mill. Next to him is a step ladder, used to reach the top of the mill. Two other men can be seen in the background. A horizontal boring machine (or horizontal boring mill) is a machine tool which bores holes in a horizontal direction. There are three main types — table, planer and floor. The table type is the most common and, as it is the most versatile, it is also known as the universal type.
